Men's Accessories: Spring's New Must-haves PDF Print E-mail

Fashion is very rarely restricted to the styles you see on the men's runways. It's often a mix of what you see on High Street and what you see on the streets that will drive the trends for any season. This year promises to be no different. As the tastemakers of the streets and the magazine pages weigh in this spring, the new must-have accessories are taking on much clearer colors.

Bold Neckties

For the past few seasons, neckties have taken a largely ornamental role. They were kept black and slim and understated, merely complements to suits that were just as black, slim and understated. In the next few months, expect them - the bright necktie, in particular - to take center stage in more and more outfits that you encounter on the street.

Power ties are bowing out for the season. The real style statements for this season (and for the next several months) will be bold and bright but simple. Teal and coral are the new favorites, replacing more sober standards like navy and burgundy. Striped ties are only required if you need to tone down and balance the sheer exuberance of all that color. Otherwise, keep it plain to let the wild shade take over.

Ideally, the accompanying ensemble should be quiet and understated. A shout, after all, is clearest when it comes in the midst of silence. Far from being boring, a black or navy and white outfit further underlines how youthful and energetic your new necktie is. The bold necktie is the star of this stage, so don't let any of your other pieces steal its thunder.

High-Top Shoes

Granted, the recent fad of high-top shoes were likelier meant for the skateboarding niche or the Justin Bieber demographic. The recent success of lines like Jimmy Choo's high-top sneakers or Kanye West's collaboration with Louis Vuitton, however, point out that this might be a bandwagon even mature fashion-conscious men are willing to ride.

Of all the trends earmarked for the season, this is one of the most anachronistic. Not all men over 30 can pull off a pair of shoes marketed to an under-20 crowd. Since Mr. West seems to do it on a regular basis, though, you should be able to cop the style, at least in theory. Start with the plainest pair of solid black or white hi-tops you can find; timeless brands like Converse carry their own lines if you don't want to splurge for Mr. Choo.

Pair this with a plain solid round neck tee and a pair of casual denims. Throw in a band or army jacket if it's cold out. The shoes will already make the whole outfit casual, and you can't 'dress it up' by adding a formal shirt or a necktie. Just roll with the style the way it was meant to be worn, or give the kicks to a younger nephew if it doesn't work for you.

Colored Watches

Men have always been given a very limited range when it comes to watches. You're allowed browns, blacks, grays and precious metals, but not much else color-wise. While these are the timeless shades of men's horology, you can look forward to the next few months as a riot of colors are rolled out in watch shops near you.

Limited edition Rolexes with their green or orange faces were just the start. Plastic time pieces are making serious waves this season, with brands like Nixon and Swatch at the forefront. Mandarin orange, sea blue and camo green watches have made their way to more than a few men's wrists, and more are coming. Even plain black and white plastic watches have gotten upgrades with their new glossy style finishes.

If you intend to stay in the office with no big appointments the whole day, a plastic watch like this is a great way to spice up your style. It's a youthfully fun and rebellious addition to your everyday suit and tie. Best of all, the watches are typically cheap - the Swatches sell for just $50 - so you can have a new color for every day of the work week.  Hendrik Pohl
